Sunday August 25th was a beautiful afternoon for a three-rotation Mixed Doubles round robin using all six SYTC courts. Tennis started at 3:30 pm, and by 5:30 players had worked up an appetite for dinner. We enjoyed pizza (including a gluten free option) as well as potluck salads and desserts. Beer and wine (BYOB) and soft drinks rounded out the menu for a relaxing evening on the club patio for players and guests. Attendees were enthusiastic in their support for repeating this event next season. It was a winner! On August 11th, one of the best weather days of the Summer, all six courts were filled once again with our “Second Sunday” faithful for a fun-filled round robin. After tennis, we caravanned to the beautiful home of Jackie Carnevali for a delicious potluck brunch overlooking the Bass River. Sunny skies, low humidity, delicious food and the company of good friends combined for a picture-perfect Sunday gathering. We also enjoyed welcoming new members Bob Donovan and Byron Garcia to the fold. Thank you so much, Jackie, for helping to keep our member-hosted brunch tradition alive and well at SYTC!
Hot and steamy weather did not deter 14 enthusiastic players from trying their luck at old fashioned wood racquet tennis on Saturday afternoon, August 3rd. It was a blast from the past, when wood racquets with small sweet spots were the norm. Before long, everyone adjusted to the vintage equipment and the result was an entertaining four-court round robin with lots of laughs. After tennis, players were rewarded with an amazing cookout organized by Pam and “Grill Master” Al Hero including delicious potluck sides, salads and desserts. Several partners and guests joined for dinner, completing another successful social gathering at SYTC.
After torrential rains on Saturday, Sunday July 14th dawned bright and sunny for the “Breakfast at Wimbledon” edition of the Second Sunday mixed doubles. An enthusiastic group of players, dressed in their tennis whites, filled the courts for three rotations of play followed by an amazing British-inspired potluck brunch. Players and guests devoured delicious quiches, casseroles, croissants, strawberries and cream, scones, and coffee cakes. For a special treat, Rick Coffey mixed Pimm’s Cup cocktails, the official drink of the Championships Wimbledon. We welcomed new members Ron Nardone and Laura and Rick Barnard to the round robin and enjoyed meeting new members Lisa and Rich Renaud who joined for brunch.
SYTC’s Juniors Program clinics have kicked off with great attendance and enthusiasm. Good weather has certainly helped and juniors have been able to play most every day. More players are signing up every day and there is still plenty of room for more.
On Wednesday morning June 26 th , SYTC’s women filled all six courts for a fast-paced “meet
and greet” round robin. Steve Francis designed the format to match every player with a different partner against two different opponents for six 15-minute rotations. Upon arrival at the Club, each player drew a number between 1 and 24 and downloaded a photo of the draw sheet to their phone. For each round, the draw sheet was consulted to find out which court the player moved to next. After tennis, socializing continued with a delicious buffet luncheon of potluck dishes and desserts. Throughout the morning, comments heard from participants included “Wow, this is so fun!” and “I’ve met so many women I didn’t know before”! To which we can reply, “Mission Accomplished!” Despite questionable weather forecasts, the first two social events of the SYTC season went off
without a hitch. On June 9th, the “Second Sunday” faithful filled all six courts for a fun mixed doubles round robin followed by a delicious potluck brunch on the club patio. We welcomed new members Lisa and Bill Flaherty and sang Happy Birthday to group leader Rick Coffey. Saturday afternoon June 15 th turned out bright and sunny for the Season Opener and “Meet the Board” event . A “sold out” mixed doubles round robin included several Board members and new member Trish Rivers. More Board members and players’ spouses joined for dinner. A cookout featuring burgers, chicken, and delicious potluck sides, and welcome remarks from club President Stan Werlin, rounded out a perfect summer evening at SYTC. SYTC opened Monday April 29 for another great season of tennis on our six well-groomed clay courts. Come on by the club to try us out, enjoy the tranquil, wooded setting and join our 200 enthusiastic, satisfied members!
On September 10th, cloudy skies and humid conditions could not dampen the spirits of our Mixed Doubles enthusiasts, who again filled all six courts for three rotations of social tennis. We then made our way to Brewster where the sun came out for a delicious potluck brunch hosted by Pam and Al Hero on their beautiful deck overlooking Canoe Pond. Including spouses and partners, we numbered 36 strong for brunch – our largest turnout of the season!
Our “Season Closer” Round Robin and Brunch is scheduled for the Second Sunday of October (October 8th). If you are willing to host brunch on that date, please contact Ellen or Rick. Otherwise, we will stay at the club for brunch on the patio. The SignUp Genius invite for this date will be sent out on September 24th. We hope to see you there! Rescheduled twice for rain, the third time was the charm for the first-ever SYTC Color Wars ladies’ event which finally took place on Sunday August 27th. Six teams of four players each competed in an intricate round robin format devised by club manager Steve Francis. Players dressed in their team colors, and sported visors in their team colors as well, for a festive display of SYTC club spirit. In the end, the green team of Ellen Coffey, Kathy Glannon, Maureen McAdams, and Carol Rawlins amassed the most points and brought home the win. Tennis was followed by a sumptuous potluck luncheon of main dishes, salads, and desserts on the club patio – a delicious end to a morning filled with laughter and excitement on the courts. For those who were unable to participate this year, we hope to run this very successful event again sometime in the future.
