Cohen wins SCIAC award
ORANGE, Calif. – Junior Harry Cohen's impressive debut for the Chapman University men's tennis team has landed him the SCIAC Athlete of the Week award. Cohen began his Chapman career with wins in singles and doubles against Division II Biola in the Panthers return to the court.
Cohen and freshman Alex Granados took the No. 2 doubles match 6-2 for the first Chapman win of the season. Cohen then went to the No. 3 singles match and took a straight set victory. After battling to a 7-6 victory in the first set, he won the second set convincingly for the 7-6, 6-1 win.
Cohen and the Panthers return to the court at Azusa Pacific on Wednesday.

Harry Cohen joins the SYTC Team this summer as Head Pro and lead instructor of The Summer 2021 Juniors Program.
Harry Cohen grew up in Pacific Palisades, California and was a highly ranked junior in southern California. He played singles on the Sonoma State University tennis team until COVID-19 shut the program down this year, when he transferred to Chapman University in Orange, CA to continue his college tennis career. He will be a senior this Fall majoring in Communications. Harry has led clinics for junior and elite junior players, and is eagerly looking forward to leading SYTC’s instructional program.
"I am so excited to bring my energy and experience to the South Yarmouth Tennis Club this summer," said Harry. "I love teaching both adults and juniors and I am confident I can improve your game!"
Watch for more news about his tournament wins.
Two Great Clubs - One Great Day Camp
Two outstanding Mid Cape sports clubs with a long history of success have joined forces to form one seamless Youth Day Camp - Cape Cod Sail & Tennis.
Start the day by dropping off your children at the Bass River Sailing School before the 8:30 AM start. After the morning sailing program, children enjoy a supervised lunch at the BRYC. Next a Sailing School Coach will escort children (either walking or biking) to the nearby (a 10 minute walk) South Yarmouth Tennis Club. The Juniors Tennis Program holds daily clinics from 1-2 PM Monday-Friday. Parents pick up children at the tennis club at 2PM.
Registrations are now open for SYTC's Summer Juniors Tennis Clinics happening evert weekday in July and August 2021. Go here for more info and to register: https://www.southyarmouthtennisclub.com/2021-summer-juniors-program.html
It's hard to believe the 2020 season ended nearly three months ago with a hotly contested doubles match that pitted Al Hero and Dennis Murphy against Jeff Press and Dan Corridon. The final score is not recorded in the permanent annals of the club but the players enjoyed every serve, volley and groundstroke as they closed things out for the year!
Right now our clay courts often look more like a skating rink than a tennis club, but it won't be long before we leave winter behind, see the courts readied for another season, and welcome our members back for great tennis in the summer warmth and sunshine!
It was a busy opening day at SYTC for the 2020 season - overcast skies and cool temps did not diminish the enthusiasm of so many returning (and new) members all day long.
The courts were busy in the AM with doubles and singles, and completely full at 3:30 PM with Men's Doubles, family play (Roaches and Churchills), singles, and a court rental.
Operating with careful COVID19 protocols, we are looking forward to another fine season of spirited, friendly and competitive tennis!!

Fred Churchill and Dave Mulligan warming up.
An ace in the making; brilliant backhand half-volley from Bob.
Mary Morrison and Linda Cacciapouti take Court 5.
Marilou Barsam and Sarah Thompson were all smiles!
Below - Sherry Crockett and guest Barbara Allison.
Joanne O'Bryan and Jane Bleckinger prepare to take on Sherry and Barbara.
Arriving for Afternoon Men's Doubles - the Daves (Holden and Guild) with Bob Foley.
The Bobs (Foley and Owens) prepare to do battle.
The Chucks (St.Andre and Goslin) take on Roger Beers and Tony Accuosti on the always good-natured Court 4.
A GOOD DAY WAS HAD BY ALL!!
The SYTC Board of Directors voted late Monday, in accordance with the Massachusetts Reopening Plan released by Governor Baker, to open the club on Monday May 25. We’re thankful that the Governor’s Re-opening Advisory Board reached a realistic, sensible decision about athletics that take place in an unconfined outdoor environment where social distancing is inherently achievable, facilities can be quickly disinfected and COVID-proofed, and the health and safety of players and the public at large can be aggressively protected.
A few important reminders when we open:-Please review the club’s “COVID19 Guidance” posted on the SYTC website www.southyarmouthtennisclub.com. The Guidance describes requirements and recommendations for all players at SYTC during the COVID19 pandemic. Please – Know The Rules!
-All players are required to sign SYTC’s revised Waiver of Liability prior to their first time playing.
-Follow the club’s streamlined approach: Arrive – Play – Enjoy – Depart. Please don’t congregate or linger on SYTC property.
-Mask In – Mask Out. Face coverings are required until you reach your assigned court, and again when departing the court after play is completed.
-Respect the health and safety of all players and staff, just as they are respecting yours.
-Advance court reservations are essential so that we can plan the most COVID-safe court assignments possible.
We are hopeful there will be an opportunity to relax the carefully controlled COVID19 tennis environment over the course of the summer and restore some of the social elements so important to SYTC’s culture, but for now – enjoy the active tennis lifestyle we all crave and PLAY THE CLAY!
Stan Werlin, Board President
