It's hard to believe the 2020 season ended nearly three months ago with a hotly contested doubles match that pitted Al Hero and Dennis Murphy against Jeff Press and Dan Corridon. The final score is not recorded in the permanent annals of the club but the players enjoyed every serve, volley and groundstroke as they closed things out for the year! Right now our clay courts often look more like a skating rink than a tennis club, but it won't be long before we leave winter behind, see the courts readied for another season, and welcome our members back for great tennis in the summer warmth and sunshine!
It was a busy opening day at SYTC for the 2020 season - overcast skies and cool temps did not diminish the enthusiasm of so many returning (and new) members all day long. The courts were busy in the AM with doubles and singles, and completely full at 3:30 PM with Men's Doubles, family play (Roaches and Churchills), singles, and a court rental. Operating with careful COVID19 protocols, we are looking forward to another fine season of spirited, friendly and competitive tennis!! Below - Bill Butler, Bob Levine and Fred Churchill ready to take Court 1 for the first men's doubles match of the year. Fred Churchill and Dave Mulligan warming up. An ace in the making; brilliant backhand half-volley from Bob. Mary Morrison and Linda Cacciapouti take Court 5. Marilou Barsam and Sarah Thompson were all smiles! Below - Sherry Crockett and guest Barbara Allison. Joanne O'Bryan and Jane Bleckinger prepare to take on Sherry and Barbara. Arriving for Afternoon Men's Doubles - the Daves (Holden and Guild) with Bob Foley. The Bobs (Foley and Owens) prepare to do battle. The Chucks (St.Andre and Goslin) take on Roger Beers and Tony Accuosti on the always good-natured Court 4. A GOOD DAY WAS HAD BY ALL!!
The SYTC Board of Directors voted late Monday, in accordance with the Massachusetts Reopening Plan released by Governor Baker, to open the club on Monday May 25. We’re thankful that the Governor’s Re-opening Advisory Board reached a realistic, sensible decision about athletics that take place in an unconfined outdoor environment where social distancing is inherently achievable, facilities can be quickly disinfected and COVID-proofed, and the health and safety of players and the public at large can be aggressively protected.
A few important reminders when we open:-Please review the club’s “COVID19 Guidance” posted on the SYTC website www.southyarmouthtennisclub.com. The Guidance describes requirements and recommendations for all players at SYTC during the COVID19 pandemic. Please – Know The Rules! -All players are required to sign SYTC’s revised Waiver of Liability prior to their first time playing. -Follow the club’s streamlined approach: Arrive – Play – Enjoy – Depart. Please don’t congregate or linger on SYTC property. -Mask In – Mask Out. Face coverings are required until you reach your assigned court, and again when departing the court after play is completed. -Respect the health and safety of all players and staff, just as they are respecting yours. -Advance court reservations are essential so that we can plan the most COVID-safe court assignments possible. We are hopeful there will be an opportunity to relax the carefully controlled COVID19 tennis environment over the course of the summer and restore some of the social elements so important to SYTC’s culture, but for now – enjoy the active tennis lifestyle we all crave and PLAY THE CLAY! South Yarmouth Tennis Club is located at 149 Old Main Street, South Yarmouth. -Reprinted From Cape Cod Times Sports Notices 5-8-2020 The SYTC Board of Directors is carefully monitoring the status of the Massachusetts and Town of Yarmouth mandates relating to restricted business operations and gatherings as state and local governments and public health officials take action to get on top of the pandemic. As of right now, we are pleased to tell you that our tennis court contractor - Cape & Islands Tennis & Track, has SYTC on schedule for mid-April installation of courts. It is our expectation that as a private outdoor tennis club, using the recommended social distancing protocols, we will be ready to welcome returning members, new members and drop-in players back to SYTC for another season of great Cape tennis. We’ll continue to update you on our progress. Play The Clay! Stan Werlin, Board President Think it's easy to hit a tennis ball with the same wooden racquet that many of us grew up with? Think again. With a "sweet spot" about the size of a tennis ball, even those of us who think we have "game," were tested in this year's Woods & Whites Classic. After three abbreviated sets of no-add scoring, the victors were Debbie Norton and John Harding. A delicious meal with a variety of appetizers, salads, and grilled brats, burgers and dogs followed. Our thanks to Al & Pam Hero who organize this annual event and to Al who provides his collection of wooden racquets for use by players and grills up a tasty meal!
The First Family Combo Tennis event was held on Saturday morning, August 3rd. Four courts were filled with competitive and lively teams. Seasoned players, college players, high school and middle school players, even fairly new to tennis players, and all related to their partner. The family feud format had the Pink and Blue Teams competing for prizes. Champs for the Pink Team were Fred Churchill and nephew, Ben Kallman and for the Blue, Grace Harding and grandson, Thomas Rezendes. Finalists for the Pink team were Lida LLoyd and son Stratton Lloyd, and for the Blue Team, John Rezendes & Timothy Churchill. Fun prizes were awarded and Catherine Towner won. The "travelled the furthest", was from Houston, TX. All enjoyed fresh fruit, breakfast muffins , lemonade & tea.
After a tornado touched down in South Yarmouth, knocked out power and downed many trees, closing the entrance and exit to SYTC on Tuesday, July 23rd, an impressive volunteer effort, led by Club Manager Steve Francis, had things cleaned up and the courts ready for play by 12 Noon on Wednesday, July 24th, The courts are cleared of debris, rolled, swept and lined and ready to go. Power has been restored, the exit and entrance roadways are open, and all parking areas are available.

A very special thanks to Associate Manager Ken Huckins for his work Tuesday night after the tornado wreaked havoc. Ken worked to take down large tree limbs and clear the entrance to SYTC, a huge boost for the Wednesday morning clean-up effort. Ken, the entire club appreciates your dedication and owes you a huge debt of gratitude! The South Yarmouth Tennis Club hosted our annual Ladies Member-Guest tournament on a hot & steamy summer July morning. All participants were ready to go at 9 a.m., after a welcome from manager Steve Francis. Guests vied for prizes, trying to hit a serving target. Guest Nettie Hoagland won!
Play continued, round robin style. Two teams qualified for second place and a play off followed. Sue Adams and Cindy Noble bested Pam Hero and Fran Stevens. A finals match followed versus the first place finishers, Harriet Brochu and Anne Walesak. Noble/Adams prevailed in a super tie-breaker , 11-9. A delicious luncheon followed with much camaraderie. Nearly 100 spectators enjoyed a terrific doubles exhibition featuring four of Cape Cod's best homegrown talents on Saturday evening at the South Yarmouth Tennis Club on a picture perfect Cape Cod evening. Players included Sonny Bisazza, Max Francis, Aidan Roach and Patrick Wyeth – some of the best Cape Cod players to ever pick up a racquet. Watching these athletes grown up on the courts of SYTC and seing them as the fine young men they are today is a pleasure for everyone. Hearing the sound of the ball off their racquets, makes you realize - they are playing a different game than some of us! An then there was the food! So many delicious appetizers, main course and of course... DESSERTS! We are very grateful to the Event Team who worked with a large crew of volunteers to make this all happen!
