It could not have been any better weather for yesterday's Summer Dinner Party & Tennis Exhibition at the South Yarmouth Tennis Club.  The semi-annual event attracted more than 100 attendees including some of Cape Cod's tennis royalty. (See pix below.)  SYTC Pros Harry Cohen (pictured above coiling to serve) and Nik Ginter put on a show along with Cape Cod favorites Nick Majewski (son of Bob Majewski, Mid Cape Athletic Club owner) and Patrick Wyeth.  Special thanks to Club Manager, Steve Francis, who recruited this top notch group of Exhibition Pros.  Many members commented that this was the best tennis exhibition they had ever witnessed. 

More than 40 members volunteered to lead teams including setup/breakdown, grille, check-in, parking, desserts, food acquistion, appetizers, flowers and more.  And, many others made apps and desserts.  It takes a team effort to make a BIG event like this work, and as a "members club" SYTC members know that and always come through in style!

There are so many people to thank that we will surely miss someone by listing them here, so let it be known that all of your contributions to this effort were greatly appreciated.

On July 27 th , 12 teams of SYTC ladies and their guests took to the courts for some fun-filled competition
followed by a delicious luncheon prepared by our members. Non-member friends and relatives as well
as members who joined the club this season qualified as “guests” for this event. A five-rotation round
robin culminated in a highly entertaining best-of-five game “final” played between the two highest
scoring teams of Alex Scopeletis and guest Lisa DiMarzio, and Sarah Thompson and 2023 new member
Liz Anderson. Alex and Lisa just edged out the win, and all four finalists received small tennis-themed
prizes. Many thanks to Events Committee members Pam Hero and Sarah Churchill Silberman for taking
the lead on organizing this very enjoyable morning, and to Events Director Ellen Coffey and committee
members Marilou Barsam, Maureen Lambe and Cathy Spahr for pitching in to assist them!

​On Sunday morning, July 9th, SYTC's courts were full for a Wimbledon-themed "2nd Sunday" Mixed Doubles event.  Many players dressed in white for a fun three-rotation round robin followed by a delicious potluck brunch on the club patio with Wimbledon matches streaming in the background. The "most authentic" potluck contribution award goes to Rick Coffey, who brought the ingredients for Pimm's Cup cocktails, the signature drink of The Championships, Wimbledon!

The next "2nd Sunday" Mixed Doubles outing will take place on August 13th, with a round robin starting at 9:30am followed by brunch at a member's home.

​June 11th dawned warm and sunny for an enthusiastic group of SYTC members both new and seasoned who gathered for the first Round Robin and Brunch of the season.  We filled all six courts for three rotations of entertaining “get to know you” tennis, and a handful of others joined at brunch time for a sumptuous spread of home cooked casseroles, quiches, baked goods, fruits, and beverages.  It was a wonderful morning highlighting the best of SYTC -- fun tennis, great food, and, above all, friendship.
Our next Round Robin and Brunch is scheduled for the Second Sunday of July (July 9th, with a rain date of Sunday, July 23rd) and the theme will be “Celebrate Wimbledon”.   We hope to see you there!

On one of the hottest days of the the summer on Cape Cod, twelve noble combatants took the courts of SYTC in a display of skill and good humor at the 2022 Woods & Whites mixed doubles tournament and cookout.  Tennis with a 65 square inch head wooden racquet (on average half the size of a modern racquet head) is an entirely different game than we are all used to playing today. Challenging, difficult, kinda fun, and very humbling. It requires back to tennis basics skills to hit the ball successfully. Event organizer Pam Hero notes... "As I watch and take photos, I see great improvement within 30 minutes of play with almost every player even if it doesn’t feel like it to the player. Still nice to get back to our modern racquets the next time we play!"   The food everyone brought was terrific, as usual. And, GrillMaster Al Hero always serves up great burgers, dogs and brats! 

After the exhibition, club members got a chance to try and return serves from Head Pro, Harry Cohen.  Many tried..., and some even got the ball back over the net!   See pics below. ​

​Harry Cohen, SYTC Head Pro grew up in Pacific Palisades, California and was a highly ranked high school player in Southern California. He went on to play singles and doubles on the Sonoma State University tennis team until COVID-19 shut the program. Harry transferred to Chapman University in Orange, CA. and played #2 for Chapman. He received Conference Athlete of the week twice as well as being ranked #7 in the country for doubles.  He just graduated with a degree in Communications. Harry has led clinics for junior and elite junior players and is eagerly looking forward to leading SYTC’s instructional program again this summer.

​Max "The Beast" Francis is finishing up his Masters Degree at Assumption University. He was a three-year Team Captain and played  #1 singles and doubles. Max grew up on Cape Cod and got his start playing early on the community courts in his neighborhood where he and his sister were were coached by a well-known local tennis Club Manager. Max is currently a teaching pro at Willowbend Country Club in Mashpee.

​Aidan Roach grew up on Cape Cod and is a two-sport athlete having competed in both hockey and tennis in high school.  When he went to college and concentrated on tennis, he became the #1 player for Curry College and was a four-year team captain.  Aidan currently works as an analyst at Bain & Company in Boston. You may know his proud parents Joe and Barb Roach, long-time SYTC members. 

​Start your weekend off with a Friday evening game of tennis & pizza party on Friday, July 8th, 5:00-7:30. Pam and Alan Hero will host this fun mixed doubles tennis game. Sign up at the club to reserve your spot on the court. Pizza will be ordered and delivered to us there. Please bring $5.00 (cash only!) per person to pay for the pizza. BYOB and guests are welcome to come to cheer us on and join in the pizza + for dinner.
